After feeding the first watts of electricity into the grid in November 2023, the team of Dubai Waste-to-Energy has reached another big step in the project, as all five waste incineration lines are now operational! This means that all five lines are now actively managing waste and, seamlessly connected to the steam turbine, are currently generating 150 MWh of energy.
From an operational standpoint, the facility is now handling approximately 5,600 tonnes of municipal waste every day, maintaining uninterrupted operation. 130 operators from Shou’alah, the joint venture of BESIX and Hitachi Zosen Inova that was set up to operate and maintain the plant, will now ensure the facility’s operations around the clock.
In terms of construction, the team’s current focus is primarily on de-snagging and site clearance. In addition, the team is conducting the contractual facility proving and acceptance tests, marking a pivotal step towards commencing the Early Operations Period in March.
The Dubai Waste-to-Energy plants is one of the world’s largest facilities of its kind built in a single phase. When fully operational, the facility will process approximately 5,600 tonnes of waste per day and generate enough electricity to power approximately 135,000 homes in the region without relying on fossil fuels. Thanks to the facility, about 45 % of municipal waste is redirected away from landfills.
