An innovative conservation strategy for White's Seahorses in Sydney’s Harbour

Group 1 min read

2019 marked a gloomy moment for Australia’s marine wildlife, as the Australian government officially declared White’s Seahorses (Hippocampus Whitei) an endangered species. The loss of their natural habitat due to human activities has been the primary cause of their steady decline.

Particularly in Sydney Harbour and along the coast of New South Wales, the White’s Seahorse population experienced a distressing reduction of 50% and 95% respectively, between 2008 and 2015.

In response to this critical situation, the BESIX Watpac team active on the Ferry Wharves Upgrade project has been working with conservationists on an innovative and proactive solution to protect and preserve this species: the installation of ten "seahorse hotels", that function as a safe haven where seahorses can live, feed, and breed.

As part of the larger Manly Wharf 3 project, these ten specially designed residences have been strategically placed in anticipation of the planned construction activities set for 2024. The early installation allows these artificial habitats to mature and develop before the construction commences.

What makes these seahorse hotels exceptional is their construction from organic metal materials. Designed to naturally degrade over time, they will leave behind a semi-natural reef comprising marine organisms like sponges, soft corals, and seaweed. This unique habitat not only provides shelter and sustenance to the seahorses but also significantly contributes to the overall well-being of Sydney Harbour's ecosystem.

In preparation for the beginning of works in the coming year, a comprehensive survey of existing maritime structures and neighbouring seagrass meadows within the project area is underway. This survey aims to locate the endangered Hippocampus Whitei, enabling their safe capture and temporary relocation to the newly established seahorse hotels in Manly Cove.

The commitment to sustainable construction practices exhibited by the BESIX Watpac team is commendable. By actively safeguarding White's Seahorses, they not only protect this endangered species but also contribute to the long-term health of Sydney Harbour and the broader marine environment. Congrats to all colleagues involved!
