Week of 7 April 2025
1. Final site visits at the Scheldt Tunnel elements in Zeebrugge (Belgium)
Last week, our teams welcomed the very last visitors to the dry dock in the port of Zeebrugge, where the COTU joint venture has built the elements of the Scheldt Tunnel. Over the past few years, more than 14,000 people have had the chance to see this impressive construction site up close!
The 1.8-kilometre tunnel is a key part of the Oosterweel Link, which will close the northern section of the Antwerp Ring Road. Construction of the eight tunnel elements began in 2021, and with most of the works now completed, preparations are underway to transport them to Antwerp starting in May. Exciting times ahead for this transformative project!
2. BESIX Watpac delivers new Mental Health Unit at Gold Coast University Hospital (Australia)
Our BESIX Watpac colleagues have successfully completed the new Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit at Gold Coast University Hospital! This is the first facility of its kind on the Gold Coast, featuring consulting and therapy rooms, interview spaces, 40 bedrooms, and dedicated medical support areas.
The project is another great example of BESIX Watpac’s expertise in delivering complex health infrastructure within live hospital environments. It’s also been a fantastic boost for the local economy, with all subcontractors sourced from the region. Plus, the team provided opportunities for over 115 apprentices and trainees, and 39 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the workforce. Well done, team BESIX Watpac!
3. Highest point core POST Rotterdam reached (the Netherlands)
Two weeks ago, our BESIX NL colleagues celebrated a major milestone at POST Rotterdam, reaching the highest point of the tower core! Meanwhile, work is in full swing on the installation of the GFRC* façade panels, progressing steadily from floor 12 up to 22.
Right in the heart of Rotterdam, POST is transforming the city’s former post office into a vibrant, multifunctional complex, featuring a 155-metre-high tower with apartments and a hotel. An exciting project shaping the skyline of Rotterdam!
*GFRC stands for Glass-Fibre Reinforced Concrete.
4. Fire safety first at Zayed National Museum (UAE)
Last week, the teams at the Zayed National Museum site in Abu Dhabi refreshed their fire safety knowledge with a dedicated training session, focusing on fire prevention, emergency procedures, and the proper use of firefighting equipment.
The Zayed National Museum is one of two world-class museums under construction by BESIX Middle East in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, alongside the iconic Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Once completed, it will celebrate the life and legacy of Sheikh Zayed and the rich history of the UAE.
And then this... Cleaning up in Denmark & Belgium
Last week, our colleagues at the Nordhavn Tunnel project in Denmark and the Vanhout team in Belgium rolled up their sleeves for a cleaner environment! At the Nordhavn tunnel, the team joined forces with the client during the Danish national waste collection week. Meanwhile, our enthusiastic Vanhout colleagues took action around their business park, helping to keep their surroundings spotless. Great initiative!
