BESIX has been awarded the construction contract for The Fifty Six, a landmark redevelopment of the former National Bank of Belgium printing works on Boulevard de Berlaimont in the heart of Brussels.
The project, developed by Fifty Six Gardens (3D Real Estate and Burco), aims to transform and extend this historic 1950s building into a mixed-use urban development, integrating offices, housing, retail space and a hotel operated by The Mix. The redevelopment seeks to preserve the architectural heritage of the site while introducing new functionalities adapted to contemporary urban life.
A dense and mixed-use urban project
The project covers approximately 18,000 m² of gross floor area and will deliver a diverse mix of uses, including office spaces, residential units, retail areas and a hotel. Located on a prominent inner-city block bordered by Boulevard de Berlaimont, Rue des Comédiens, Rue des Sables and Rue Saint-Laurent, The Fifty Six will contribute to the ongoing regeneration of central Brussels and reinforce the mixed-use character of the neighborhood.
BESIX driving the transformation
BESIX will play a leading role in the delivery of the project, overseeing the construction works for the renovation and extension of the existing building. The scope includes structural works, façade works, new technical installations and finishing works. The project reached a major milestone on 29 September 2026 with the official laying of the foundation stone, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this landmark site in the heart of Brussels. Completion of the project is scheduled for spring 2028.

Contributing to the transformation of an emblematic site
Originally used for banknote printing, the site is being redeveloped following the granting of the necessary permits and the completion of initial preparatory works. The project focuses on a balanced approach to renovation, preserving the existing structure while adapting it to new uses.
By combining heritage reuse with new urban functions, the redevelopment of the former printing works will reintegrate the site into the urban fabric and create a vibrant new destination in Brussels city centre.
