On 17 October 2026, the new Pyramid Bridge over the Ringvaart canal in Ghent was officially inaugurated, marking an important milestone in the R4 West and East redevelopment project (R4WO). Around 3,000 local residents gathered on the bridge to celebrate its opening before traffic is gradually diverted onto the structure later this month.
Delivered by the BRAVO4 consortium, of which BESIX and BESIX Infra are a member, the bridge plays a key role in the transformation of the R4 ring road around Ghent. Once operational, it will improve traffic safety, increase accessibility and support smoother mobility in one of Flanders' most important economic regions.
An iconic new landmark in Ghent
Designed by Ney & Partners, the Pyramid Bridge is already emerging as a striking landmark on the northern edge of Ghent. The structure spans 106 metres, rises approximately 30 metres above the canal and weighs 6,687 tonnes. Its distinctive pyramid-shaped silhouette makes it one of the most recognisable new bridges in Belgium. Beyond its architectural appeal, the bridge was designed to serve a wide range of users and contribute to sustainable mobility. The structure carries traffic on the R4, includes a connection to the regional cycle highway network and incorporates an ecopassage, allowing wildlife to cross the Ringvaart safely.
Overcoming major technical challenges
The completion of the Pyramid Bridge is the result of years of collaboration between project partners, engineers and construction teams. One of the project's most remarkable feats was the relocation of the existing bridge while maintaining traffic flow on this vital transport corridor. Traffic is expected to be gradually switched onto the new bridge during the weekend of 23-25 October 2026, marking the start of a new chapter for mobility around Ghent.
Part of the R4WO transformation project
The Pyramid Bridge is one of the flagship structures within the R4WO project, one of the largest infrastructure and mobility projects currently underway in Flanders. The project aims to transform the R4 around Ghent into a safer, more efficient and more sustainable transport corridor. Works include the construction of new bridges and tunnels, upgraded cycling infrastructure and redesigned interchanges that improve mobility for residents, businesses and freight traffic connected to the Port of Ghent. Through their participation in the BRAVO4 consortium, BESIX and BESIX Infra contribute to the design, construction, financing and long-term maintenance of the project, helping to deliver infrastructure that will benefit the region for decades to come.
