Week of 6 October
1. Connecting the Scheldt Tunnel to Antwerp’s Left Bank (Belgium)
In Antwerp, four of the eight Scheldt Tunnel elements have now been successfully immersed beneath the river. Each section remains sealed off by bulkheads, or solid end walls that keep the tunnel watertight during transport. Thanks to built-in doors, the immersed sections are still accessible. This week, the TM COTU team is removing the bulkhead between the tunnel entrance at Antwerp’s Left Bank and the first tunnel section, marking the first physical connection to the Left Bank. Curious how this operation works? Watch this video by the client to discover it (in Dutch).
Meanwhile, the navigation channel is being shifted to the opposite bank to prepare for the immersion of the remaining elements, expected to be in place by the end of the year. The tunnel will open in phases from 2028.
2. VIP visit at Zayed National Museum (UAE)
In Abu Dhabi, H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, visited the Zayed National Museum last week to review progress ahead of its opening in December 2025. Located in the Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum will honour the UAE’s founding father and rich history through six permanent galleries, a temporary exhibition space and a 600-metre outdoor gallery. You can relive the visit in this video. Our colleagues have done a tremendous job, well done!
3. A peek behind the scenes at POST (the Netherlands)
Construction influencer Jeroen recently visited our POST Rotterdam project for an exclusive look behind the scenes. His video (in Dutch) captures the transformation of the city’s former post office, featuring a new 155-metre tower that will house apartments and a hotel. Since reaching the tower’s highest point in June, our BESIX NL team has been focusing on interior finishes and installing the striking glass-fibre reinforced concrete (GFRC) façade elements. Behind these tailor-made arches, an aluminium curtain wall is being added to ensure strong energy performance. Keep up the good work, colleagues!
4. Rail Baltica Riga Central Station team welcomes the press (Latvia)
In Riga, the BERERIX team recently welcomed Estonian and Latvian journalists at the Rail Baltica Central Station site. The visit offered a closer look at the progress of this major infrastructure project, its future benefits for passengers and the urban environment, and the broader impact of Rail Baltica in the region.
The development includes a new central station building, a railway bridge over the Daugava river, and extensive track and embankment works. It’s the most significant infrastructure investment in the Baltic States in a century, aiming to connect the region to the wider European railway network.
And then this... BESIX teams take on 175-kilometre relay
This weekend, various colleagues from BESIX Construction, BESIX Invest and BESIX Environment teamed up to do the Ultra Trail des Montagnes du Jura (UTMJ), a 175 kilometre relay through the Jura mountains, on the border between France and Switzerland. Running in teams of six, they tackled the course together and marked an impressive athletic achievement. Well done to everyone who took part!
