We are thrilled to announce that the Vistula Spit Project, a collaboration between BESIX and NDI Group, has been awarded the prestigious "Best Construction Award 2022" in Poland. This award recognises BESIX’s exceptional achievement in the construction of a new shipping channel in the Gulf of Gdansk, a strategic investment that has far-reaching positive impacts.
About the Vistula Spit project
The Vistula Spit Channel, one of the most fascinating hydro-technical investments in Poland, serves as a vital link connecting the Gulf of Gdansk with the Vistula Lagoon. From its inception, this project has been a testament to strong vision and execution. Its complexity is evidenced by the meticulous organisation of works, diverse range of facilities, and sheer scale of materials used.
A remarkable endeavour
The Vistula Spit Project involved simultaneous construction of a sheltered harbour on the Bay of Gdańsk and a channel with breakwaters, lock infrastructures with rotating bridges and sluice gates, buildings and roads, as well as an artificial island.
Innovative construction techniques
What sets this project apart is not just its scale but the innovative approaches employed. The breakwaters, essential for the project's success, were reinforced using a pioneering technology: prefabricated XblocPlus® elements. The precision involved was staggering, with each concrete element weighing between 2.5 and 12 tonnes meticulously documented. A detailed blueprint was prepared in advance, ensuring every XblocPlus found its precise geodetic coordinate-defined location.
Technical marvel
The navigation channel itself spans 1,526 meters in length, with a depth of 6.5 meters and a width of 120 meters along the length of the waiting stations, gradually narrowing to 25 meters along the length of the lock. Astonishingly, this project was completed in a mere 35 months, a testament to the dedication and expertise of the teams involved.
