Safety: Intensive training for ‘Appointed Person - Lifting Operations’ certification

Group 1 min read

In a decisive move to reinforce safety culture across our sites and teams, a new series of training paths has been launched to certify key personnel as ‘Appointed Person - Lifting Operations’ in accordance with ISO 23813:2007.

Over the course of five intensive days, participants dive deep into the responsibilities, planning, and risk management required for lifting operations. The training is specifically tailored for experienced method engineers, technical office engineers, and construction managers, equipping them with expert knowledge and authority to lead with confidence and precision.

Cross-functional training

The sessions are hosted at the training centre of Sarens, a world-renowned expert in heavy lifting and engineered transport. This partnership adds significant technical depth to the initiative, ensuring participants benefit from best-in-class instruction and real-world insights.

Already, two sessions have been successfully organised, with eight participants per group. The next session is scheduled for November, continuing the momentum and expanding the circle of certified professionals.

What makes this initiative stand out is its collegial spirit. The training brings together colleagues from Safety, Engineering, Construction Belgium, Europe and International, encouraging cross-functional learning and return on experience. It’s a strong example of how safety transcends borders and disciplines.

Life Saving Rule #4

This program is deeply aligned with our Life Saving Rules, reinforcing the principle that safety is not negotiable. It directly supports the “Safe Mechanical Lifting” rule (LSR #4), which emphasizes the importance of thoroughly planning lifting activities, maintaining control over the lifting area, and using equipment that is both inspected and fit for purpose. It also highlights the need for clear communication between operators and signallers, conducting pre-lift briefings with all crew members, and ensuring supervision is adapted to the complexity of the lift.

By investing in people and empowering them with the right tools and training, we are building a safer, smarter, and more resilient BESIX.
