Project Update: Bospoort Bridge (BE)

Me@BESIX Group 2 min read

In Halle (BE), JV BESIX-BESIX Infra-BESIX Unitec is replacing the existing Bospoort Bridge with a new, movable steel bridge for client De Vlaamse Waterweg. Additionally, a new quay wall will be constructed on both sides of the canal behind the existing quay wall. These works aim to improve the accessibility of the canal for inland vessels and promote container shipping. We spoke with Alexander Hoste, Project Manager.

Q: Can you give us an update on the current status of the Bospoort Bridge project in Halle, Belgium?

Alexander: Absolutely! We've made significant progress. The secant piles for the quay walls on both banks, which have a diameter of 80cm, are now complete. The head beam on the left bank is finished, and we’re currently working on the concrete for the head beam on the right bank. As for the old quay wall on the left bank, demolition is ongoing, and we dismantled the old bridge at the end of March.

Q: What are the upcoming tasks that your team will focus on?

Alexander: Next, we'll complete the concrete work for the head beam on the right bank. We’ll also construct concrete basements and abutments on both banks to house electromechanical installations for the new movable bridge. Additionally, we’ll be building access ramps next to the railway infrastructure, which will connect the lowered towpath by the canal to the elevated station square. Finalizing the execution design is also on our agenda.

Q: What challenges are you facing with this project?

Alexander: There are a few notable challenges. One is the limited workspace—we’re working in tight areas on the right bank between the railway infrastructure and the canal, and on the left bank between residential buildings and the canal. The terrain is also quite rocky and irregular, which requires specialized machinery for foundations in the rock. Moreover, we've had to make numerous adjustments to the initial design, so there’s been more design work than expected. The challenge is to create an executable design that considers all constraints, such as limited space, rocky ground, existing structures, and financial aspects.

Q: How is BESIX making a difference in this project?

Alexander: BESIX is executing this project as TM BESIX nv-BESIX Infra-BESIX Unitec for De Vlaamse Waterweg. We’re leveraging the expertise from our various subsidiaries to ensure a successful completion. This project is the perfect example of how our strengths if we work in a one-stop-shop approach. Detailed preparation by the BESIX site team, in combination with BED, is crucial. Our focus is on carrying out the work safely and maintaining high quality. We also prioritize open and clear communication with our client, which fosters trust and consistently constructive collaboration.

Thanks, Alexander, for this update and good luck with the upcoming milestones!
