Lusail Towers: all hands on deck

Group 2 min read

In two months’ time, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar is kicking off and millions of football fans will head down to the country to celebrate or cheer their favourite team to victory from home. However, that’s not the only thing to look forward to in Qatar, because in Lusail, a neighbourhood north of Doha, the Lusail Towers are in the making! An emblematic project which our colleagues in Qatar are contributing to together with their joint venture partner MIDMAC.

The Lusail Towers are two 70-storey and two 50-storey high towers that are arranged symmetrically around a central plaza. The MIC Construct-MIDMAC joint venture is responsible for the design and construction of the two 50-storey towers, as well as a series of low-level podium buildings at the bases of the towers.

Inspired by the traditional Islamic architecture, these buildings will create a series of interconnected public spaces where a wide range of activities can take place. The towers are part of the larger Lusail City development which involves transforming and developing the area north of Doha into a residential and commercial district.

And as you can see in the pictures, our teams are well underway to make a stunning contribution to that. Time for an update!

Showpiece of the project is the façade. Cladded in marine-grade aluminium, they are designed with projecting profiles that wrap around the building, shading the glazing from the harsh sun.

The façades of the towers have been completed in the summer of 2022, while the façade at podium level will be finished by mid-October and the panel installation on the podium roofs will be finished by the end of October.

In addition to this, the teams are also focusing on dismantling the numerous cranes present on site. Two tower cranes have already been dismantled from the roof of the towers. At podium level, the dismantling is also underway: by the end of October, all ten cranes will be dismantled. Another focus is on the façade lighting of the towers, which has already been made operational. At the end of September, the first substations will be energised. Lastly, the teams are working hard on the hardscaping, which is currently already ongoing for the priority areas.

The project will then be on hold during the World Cup, which is taking place from November until December. Afterwards, our teams will complete the remaining finishing works, as well as the testing & commissioning. With the tournament approaching fast, pressure is rising to finish certain external activities, which means it’s all hands on deck.

So that leaves us with one more thing to say: good luck, team!
