This morning, the Belgian Interregional Environment Agency (IRCEL-CELINE) announced that air quality has deteriorated again yesterday and overnight. High concentrations of fine particles were measured in the air.
Last night (Thursday 13 February), at 11.30pm, the information threshold of 35 µg/m³ for PM2.5 (24-hour rolling average) was exceeded in Flanders. Last night (Friday 14 February), at 2.30am, this threshold was also exceeded in the Brussels Region. The information threshold for PM10 (50 µg/m³) was also exceeded in Flanders. In Wallonia, the information thresholds have not (yet) been exceeded.
Given that average concentrations are expected to remain above 35 µg/m³ in PM2.5 (as a rolling 24-hour average) and/or 50 µg/m3 in PM10 (as a rolling 24-hour average) for more than 24 hours, the information phase is activated in Flanders and Brussels.
What to do concretely?
To limit pollutant emissions, we encourage you to choose an alternative means of transport to the car, limit your journeys, turn down your heating, etc.
In terms of your commute to work, we advise you to:
- Take public transport, if possible
- Opt for carpooling
- Apply the principles of eco-driving if travel by car is unavoidable.
Inform and prepare
Download the "Brussels Air" app to be informed about the air quality in Brussels. The app will also notify you in the event of an alarm due to a pollution peak.
