First seat installed for One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha in Christchurch as project gears up for completion

Global Group 1 min read

BESIX Watpac has entered the final year of construction at One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha, a 30,000-seat, multi-purpose venue in the heart of Christchurch. With seating and roofing installation now in full swing, the project remains on track for completion in April 2026.

First seat in place

At the end of June, the first of 25,000 permanent seats was installed. An additional 5,000 temporary seats can be added for large-scale events, bringing the total capacity to 30,000.

The seats, finished in black and grey, will form a striking pattern inspired by the hammerhead shark, designed by local Ngāi Tūāhuriri artist. The seating installation is one of the final major workstreams to commence and is expected to be completed later this year.

Roofing installation underway

In addition, progress is being made on the roof installation. The stadium will feature a fully covered roof, incorporating Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). This strong, lightweight clear material is installed in twin layers and allows natural daylight to reach the turf, supporting healthy growth while shielding spectators from the elements.

The roof cladding above the south stand is nearing completion, while installation of the ETFE sections is progressing steadily and will continue into late 2025. Moreover, sports lighting has recently been fixed to the service walkways mounted within the roof structure.

Site activity gaining momentum

Activity across the site continues to build pace. External stairs are being installed and landscaping works have commenced, creating walkways, gardens and green spaces that will enhance the area’s appeal.

Meanwhile, interior fit-outs are progressing well. Food and beverage outlets in the southern and eastern stands are taking shape, alongside ongoing fit-out works in the western stand. Many kitchens, bathrooms, and back-of-house areas are now complete.

The project remains on budget and firmly on schedule. The stadium is set to start hosting major sports events and international concerts from April 2026.
