Our team in Copenhagen (Denmark) has recently entered a new phase in the construction of the Nordhavn tunnel. After completing the piling works, they have recently kicked off excavation works for the construction pit!
The preceeding piling works included the installation of sheet piles, secant piles, and uplift anchors for the construction pit. During this phase, our team had to deal with challenging weather conditions, with a lot of wind and rain. This caused limited delays to the works, however, we are confident that the team will eliminate these delays will in the coming months.
The excavation phase, which started in the Nordhavn neighbourhood, will now continue throughout 2024. Later this spring, our colleagues will also start excavations on the side of Østerbro. The casting of the actual tunnel is scheduled to start this summer and will proceed alongside the excavation works. Did you know that more than 90,000 m³ of the excavated soil will be repurposed in the tunnel construction?
Congratulations on this major milestone, team Denmark! We can’t wait to see the tunnel taking shape.
On behalf of the Danish Road Directorate, BESIX and MT Højgaard Denmark are designing and building the 1.4-kilometre-long cut-and-cover Nordhavn Tunnel, which is one of Copenhagen’s largest infrastructure projects at the moment. It will provide a more direct access to the urban development zones in outer and inner Nordhavn. In addition to the tunnel, the scope of the works also cover local roads and junctions to be built in connection with the tunnel, as well as mechanical and electrical installations and several traffic control and monitoring systems.
