Week of 20 October

1. Hyoffwind is taking shape (Belgium)

In the port of Zeebrugge, BESIX, BESIX Environment and John Cockerill have been making steady progress on the Hyoffwind project. Works on this state-of-the-art green hydrogen plant started one year ago. Since then, the team has moved from concrete to asphalt works, marking a key milestone. Congratulations, team!

Once operational, the facility will convert renewable electricity from local wind parks into green hydrogen. With an initial capacity of 25 MW, scalable up to 100 MW, it’s expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually.

2. Works on Krammer Locks officially underway (the Netherlands)

In Bruinisse, in the southwest of the Netherlands, our team has kicked off renovation works on the Krammer Locks complex after months of preparation. Last Wednesday, the first spare gate, measuring 26 metres long and weighing 340 tonnes, was transported to a workshop in Vlissingen where it will be renovated and modernised.

The locks, which handle around 60,000 vessels a year, are a vital link in the Rotterdam–Antwerp–Ghent maritime corridor. The ZEEKR joint venture, led by BESIX and including BESIX Unitec, is carrying out the works to make the infrastructure more efficient and sustainable. Good luck to everyone involved!

3. Safety first at Aramco Stadium (UAE)

In Khobar, the BESIX Middle East–Albawani team is making solid progress on the steel structure for the new Aramco Stadium. A total of 3,000 workers are working at height, and to safeguard their safety, the site has introduced several measures. One example is the considerable investment in additional safety nets, designed to protect workers in case of a fall. Another standout feature is the smart safety solution developed with their subcontractor: “man boxes” preinstalled on the primary steel arches. These provide safe access for teams working on the secondary steel elements, reducing the need for suspended platforms and lowering the risks of working at height. It’s a smart and forward-thinking idea that keeps the focus where it should always be: on people’s safety. Impressive, colleagues!

4. Franki Foundations at work in Gabon

A great example of collaboration across BESIX Group! In Gabon, our BESIX team has teamed up with Franki Foundations for the renewal of the Ebel-Abanga Bridge. Our Group’s foundations specialist is installing 70 micropiles and around 100 driven tube piles to support the future structure. The bridge is part of a wider infrastructure programme in Libreville, which also includes two urban flyovers and four pedestrian bridges. Well done, colleagues!

And then this... Another successful Construction Circle

Last week, BESIX Construction hosted the second edition of its yearly Construction Circle, a 2-day gathering combining strategic insights, knowledge exchange, teambuilding activities and informal networking. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Belgian Ardennes, attendees followed workshops about both soft skills as well as operational topics. In addition, the General Managers of the different BU’s shared their operational progress and strategic vision and an impactful session on safety with courageous testimonials from eye-witnesses completed the programme. We hope that the bonds that were formed during this gathering will further facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration between the different BU’s and the Business Enablers.
