Week of 9 September
1. Then there was light at the end of the (Picchiarella) tunnel (Italy)
Following the breakthrough of the first diaphragm wall a few weeks ago, our colleagues in Italy have now demolished the second diaphragm of the Picchiarella tunnel. This also marks the completion of the excavation of this 874-metre-long piece of infrastructure. Congratulations, team Italy!
The Picchiarella tunnel is a notable feature of the Valfabbrica project in central Italy. Together with Donati S.p.A., we are doubling State Road 318 over a distance of 3.1 kilometre, which will improve the connection and traffic flow between the cities of Perugia and Ancona. In addition to the Picchiarella tunnel, the project also includes the construction of the 1,545-metre-long Casa Castalda tunnel, the Tre Vescovi viaduct and the Calvario bridge.
2. Topping-out Eastwood Private Hospital (Australia)
BESIX Watpac also had reasons to celebrate recently, because they reached the highest point of the Eastwood Private Hospital in Adelaide (Australia)! For the occasion, they organised a Topping Out Ceremony with their partner Barwon Investment Partners, subcontractors and other stakeholders. Congratulations, BESIX Watpac!
Together with Barwon Investment Partners, BESIX Watpac is designing and building this six-storey private hospital development in Adelaide’s Eastwood precinct. It’ll include a perioperative floor, a 51-bed ward, a multi-level car park, a café and retail area, as well as integrated radiology, pathology and allied health services.
3. LuxTP contributes to new road and cycling infrastructure (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg)
Last week, the team of LuxTP installed two large girders for a cycle bridge that is part of the Transversale de Clervaux in northern Luxembourg. Each girder measures 45.3 meters in length and weighs 40 tonnes.
The Transversale de Clervaux is a new 3.7-kilometre-long stretch of road connecting the Lentzweiler industrial zone, a major economic centre in the region, to Belgium and Germany. The road will relieve congestion on the regional N18 road and improve quality of life for local residents. Besides the cycle bridge, LuxTP also built the 156-meter-long La Clerve viaduct and the 86-meter-long Olegrëndchen viaduct, which were both completed earlier this year.
Keep up the good work, LuxTP!
4. Rail Baltica’s railway bridge is getting shape (Latvia)
In Riga (Latvia), BESIX is constructing a major railway bridge over the River Daugava as part of the Rail Baltica Riga Central Station project. Works are well underway with the first pier and segment taking shape. The bridge will stretch approximately one kilometre in length and 17 meters in width. It will also feature pedestrian and cycling lanes with several entry points, greatly enhancing access to Riga's city center.
And then this… Sporty vibes at BESIX Group
Throughout the summer, teams from different BESIX Group entities and project teams have participated in numerous sports events. From climbing the hill of the Vosges (France) to participating in running competitions, it's inspiring to witness team spirit come alive through sports!
