BESIX Environment secures new contract for potable water production plant in Nieuwerkerken (Belgium)

We are delighted to announce that BESIX Environment has been awarded a contract by De Watergroep for the renovation and expansion of the potable water production plant in Nieuwerkerken, Belgium. This facility boasts a capacity of 600 m³/h. BESIX Unitec will also be involved, overseeing the electrical works and the installation of all equipment and piping.

The project encompasses both renovation and new construction. The existing production building, which dates back to the 1990s, will be renovated by our partner Renotec, with careful attention to preserving its original architecture. Additionally, all installations, including piping, pumps, and control systems, will be renewed. To ensure an uninterrupted potable water supply during the renovation, the work will be executed in two phases. A temporary partition wall will be erected to prevent contamination of the potable water when the first half of the existing installation is taken out of service. Once the first phase is completed and operational, work on the second phase will commence.

Simultaneously, a new building will be constructed in the same architectural style as the existing one. Our partner De Peuter will handle the civil works for this expansion. This addition will allow us to incorporate a new type of water treatment into the process: water softening. Hard calcareous groundwater will be softened using pellet reactors, and the extracted calcium will be repurposed as a secondary resource.

The project has a contract value of 18 million euros. Works start at the end of this summer and are expected to be completed in 40 months.

We want to thank everyone who is involved for their commitment and look forward to a successful delivery!
