Week of 28 November
1. Safety at its best at the Poti site (Georgia)
The project team recently purchased 20 wearable ‘anti-collision’ devices. These devices, worn as an armband as you can see on the picture, help mitigate the man-machine interface and prevent collision between vehicles and workers. This vibration-enabled equipment is worn by both the driver and the worker at risk and notifies both about an imminent collision by powerful vibration signal. These devices are currently tested during breakwater activities, as the team is progressing in the reconstruction of the existing breakwater, by installing X-blocks on stretch 3.
Our colleagues in Georgia also completed the BE SAFE training and deployed 5 new ambassadors, with the help of the QHSE team. BE SAFE is a group-wide safety consciousness programme with a participative approach based on working on safety behaviours.
Congratulations to all colleagues involved for walking the talk in safety!
2. Sluishuis nominated for ‘Zuiderkerkprijs 2022’ (The Netherlands)
The municipality of Amsterdam nominated the Sluishuis project for the ‘Zuiderkerkprijs’ award. Each year, and since 1998, this award goes to the best housing project in Amsterdam. An independent jury evaluates all candidates and nominates three. Congratulations to all parties involved fort his nomination! We will keep you posted as the winner will be announced on 8 December.
Sluishuis forms a bridge between IJburg and the city center. The municipality of Amsterdam awarded the development and construction of the building to VORM and BESIX RED in 2016. The complex construction was entrusted to BESIX Nederland and VORM Bouw. The result of their shared vision, which was delivered recently, is the iconic development of this building of remarkable architecture in which sustainability and well-being are key.
3. Artwork of sunset at the Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi (UAE)
Sometimes, nature is the most talented artist… The cranes and scaffolds which stand out against the golden-blue sky of Abu Dhabi make a magnificent piece of art! At its highest, the project will topple at 91m – that’s about as high as the Statue of Liberty in New York.
The new 82,000 m² Guggenheim Museum will be the largest of the four Guggenheim museums, next to New York, Venice and Bilbao, and will include art from all over the world, with a particular focus on North Africa, West and South Asia. The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi is our client for this project, and we have partnered up with Trojan General Contracting LLC.
4. “Playing with fire” in Cameroon, but with a very clear objective
On the site of the Nachtigal hydroelectric project in Cameroon, a fire-fighting exercise was recently organised by the local fire brigade, in collaboration with our BESIX colleagues. Such exercises aim at training the fire fighters in the specific situations which can occur on a project site. The picture shows the extinction of a fire outbreak on a truck.
... and then this: the BYC Party is back! (Belgium)
After a 2-year hiatus due to Covid, the BESIX Young Community (BYC) Party could take place in Belgium! The BESIX Young Community brings together young professionals under 37 years; there are several local communities of this type around the Group, each with its own calendar of activities. The one in Belgium organises a number of events, like site visits, a football tournament and an annual party. As you can tell from the pictures, the guests were very happy to be able to connect with the other young professionals at BESIX, for a collegial and fun evening.
