Week of 27 May
1. BESIX Watpac selected as principal contractor for air traffic control tower project (Australia)
BESIX Watpac has been appointed as the principal contractor for the modernisation, upgrade, and life extension of the Sydney Airport Air Traffic Control Tower. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 23 May. Congratulations to the BESIX Watpac Sydney team and sending good vibes for a smooth project!
With a portfolio that includes major airport terminal expansions in Adelaide and Darwin, upgrades at Brisbane Airport, and the successful delivery of the Western Sydney International Experience Centre, BESIX Watpac has demonstrated its capability to undertake complex and high-profile projects within the highly secure aviation sector.
2. Launch of 17th and last segment of A16 - De Groene Boog flyover (The Netherlands)
The launch of the 17th and last segment of the A16 flyover took place recently. The two 450-metre-long fly-over decks are now in place above the Terbregseplein. These viaducts, part of the 11-kilometre-long A16 Rotterdam project, were slid into place in sections with the Incremental Launching Method over the junction without disrupting traffic. The project team has now said goodbye to the blue launching nose. Bravo to the BESIX NL A16 team for this major milestone!
Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, the De Groene Boog joint venture, composed of BESIX Nederland, Dura Vermeer, Mobilis TBI, Croonwolter&dros, Van Oord, Rebel, and John Laing, is jointly responsible for the design, construction, financing, and 20-year maintenance of the A16 Rotterdam.
The work from May 8-13 is summarised in this timelapse in 1 minute!
3. Nachtigal hydroelectric power project nears completion: 1st MW injected into the grid (Cameroon)
The hydroelectric power project in Nachtigal has now reached a completion rate of almost 95 %. An important step was reached recently with the first megawatts produced by the facility that were injected into Cameroon's electricity grid! Well done, Nachtigal team, what an achievement!
BESIX, NGE - BTP, and SGTM are close to completing the project, which includes a 420 MW hydroelectric plant, a 1.5-kilometre-long dam and a 3.4-kilometre-long headrace channel. This infrastructure will generate green electricity to cover up to 30 % of Cameroon's energy needs.
4. First part of launching girder in position on Tanga jetty project (Tanzania)
The first piece of the launching girder is now in position at the Tanga jetty project. Once this equipment is fully assembled, the installation of the jetty components will begin. We will keep you posted!
The project in Tanzania involves the design and build of a jetty and load-out facilities in the bay of Tanga, the most northernly port city of Tanzania to the west of the Indian Ocean.
And then this: 20 KM of Brussels (Belgium)
Last Sunday, more than 75 employees from BESIX Group ran the 20 KM of Brussels, in erratic weather… Some had to wait in the rain before the start, but they all reached the finish line, each in their own time, with an enormous feeling of pride and satisfaction! Applause to them, well done!
