Week of 22 May

1. Celebrating the near completion of the breathtaking Grand Egyptian Museum (Egypt)

Two weeks ago, a delegation of BESIX executives and guests had the opportunity to celebrate the very-near completion of the Grand Egyptian Museum, built by BESIX and Orascom Construction. This museum is a testament to Egypt’s dedication to preserving its unique cultural heritage… and a true testament of our own engineering prowess and project management capabilities!

On the first pictures, the 4 BESIX project directors who orchestrated the project over the last 12 years take the pose: (from l. to r.) Bjorn Walgraeve, Fred Reyniers, (Mathieu Dechamps, General Manager BU International), David De Visscher and Christophe Ledur. Johan Beerlandt, Executive Vice-President of BESIX Group, and Osama Bishai, CEO of Orascom Construction, addressed their guests at this occasion, and recollected their companies’ journey of shared vision, of collaboration, and of relentless commitment to preserving the past for the future.

2. In audience with the Crown Prince of Ajman (UAE)

Our colleagues Peter Lembrechts (5th from left) and Elias Sfeir (2nd from left) recently had the privilege to be received by His Highness Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman (right), together with the Belgian Ambassador in the UAE (2nd from right). They discussed ways to strengthen the already deep and longstanding ties of the Emirate with Belgium.

BESIX has been active for decades in Ajman; Ajman Sewerage (ASPCL), SAFI water reuse station, and Ajman sludge-to-energy are a handful of examples of BESIX realisations that play a central role in managing the waste(water) of the Emirate of Ajman.

3. Global Safety Time Out in Paris at the Saint-Denis Pleyel station project (France)

Like all the BESIX sites around the world, the Saint-Denis Pleyel station project team in Paris recently held its annual Global Safety Time Out. Day in, day out, safety is the number one priority at BESIX. But on that specific day, teams hold a “time out” moment to reflect, learn, and talk about safety. This year, the Global Safety Time Out focused on the BE SAFE Principles.

4. A collector coin featuring the Vistula Spit Canal (Poland)

On 22 May 2023, the National Polish Bank put into circulation a commemorative collector coin in the series ‘Discover Poland’ featuring the Vistula Spit Canal. A beautiful way to honour for ever and always this strategic project for the country, proudly delivered by BESIX last year.

The Vistula Spit Canal is a canal across the Polish section of the Vistula Spit that creates a connection between the Vistula Lagoon and the Gulf of Gdańsk. It allows ships to enter the Vistula Lagoon and the port of Elbląg without having to rely on the Russian Strait of Baltiysk, saving a 100 km journey.

And then this… All for the fight against cancer (Belgium)

BESIX Engineering and BESIX Europe participated in the 1000 km race for ‘Kom Op Tegen Kanker’ (= ‘Fight against cancer’), a Belgian organisation that advocates for patients' right to the best treatment and care and people's right to a healthy environment. In a period of four days, three BESIX teams each cycled a total of 1,000 kms, 8 loops of 125 km each done by a member of the team in turns! To be able to do this, they organised several activities to raise money. The BESIX Engineering and BESIX Europe departments helped sponsor this initiative.
