Week of 10 October
1. Dolce ‘via’ in Valfabbrica (Italy)
In the Italian region of Umbria, BESIX is currently doubling the Via Statale (State Road) 318 in Valfabbrica over a distance of 3.1 km. Works include the construction of two tunnels of 874 m and 1,545 m, a viaduct and a bridge.
Progress is well underway with all the piling works completed. Excavation works on the tunnels are also progressing fast and all 4 tunnel entries are already open. Last week, the project team was happy to welcome BESIX Group’s Executive Chairman Johan Beerlandt and Angelo Donati, our Partner on this project.
2. Excellent progress report at 85% for the Waste-to-Energy project (UAE)
The world’s largest waste-to-energy project, taking shape in Dubai, is now 85% complete, has announced Dubai Municipality. Progress is steady as you can see on these most recent pictures: the steam turbine is installed and worked on, the stacks have now reached their final height, the outside walls are being made ready for finishings, and the roof's steel structure is under construction.
Located in Dubai’s Al Warsan area, the project will convert 45% of the Emirate’s municipal waste into renewable energy once complete. The first phase of the Dubai Waste Management Centre will be ready next year, while the entire project is scheduled to finish by 2024.
3. Successful river diversion before the rainy season (Cameroon)
The temporary diversion of the river Sanaga was successfully completed last week. The Sanaga is the largest river in Cameroon (918 km). Its flow is four times greater than that of the Seine. To ensure the continuity of the work of the Nachtigal project, it was imperative to derive the natural course of the Sanaga River before the start of the great rainy season. This diversion will make it possible to "dry" another part of the site in order to allow the progression of the main dike towards the right bank.
With an installed capacity of 420 MW, the Nachtigal hydroelectric development will produce, as soon as it is commissioned in 2024, the equivalent of 30% of the country's energy production capacity. The progress rate of the work on the site to date is 70%.
4. Socogetra opens its doors (Belgium)
Last week-end in Belgium, many companies opened their doors to present their business to the main public. At this occasion, Socogetra released the following video (in French only) presenting its activities: founded in 1948, Socogetra became part of the BESIX group in 2007 and is known for its roadworks, civil engineering and railway activities, as well as for its industrial and quarrying activities.
