Week of 4 March
1. Progress on Tanga jetty project (Tanzania)
Our project in Tanzania has taken off. In the pictures, you can see that the first concrete precast element was fixed to an offshore steel pile. The first prefabricated steel elements of the jetty that were fabricated in Vietnam were also offloaded from the cargo vessel. These elements are stored on two storage barges.
BESIX is participating in a project to design and build a jetty and load-out facilities in the bay of Tanga, on the north coast of Tanzania. The project is planned to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.
2. Jacques Delens: Update on the new sports complex in Evere, Brussels (Belgium)
The works on the new multisports complex in Evere, Brussels, are off to a good start. The Jacques Delens team has now started the construction of the new multi-sports hall. Next to this hall, the project also involves partially renovating the existing building. The new hall is designed to accommodate a variety of activities, including handball, volleyball, basketball, hockey, badminton, and mini-soccer. It will also be equipped with a grandstand that can seat up to 100 people. As an extension to the existing infrastructure of the sports complex, the new building will also include new changing rooms, sanitary facilities, and administrative and technical premises. It will also feature a cafeteria, a community kitchen, and a terrace overlooking the outdoor sports fields. This renovation and construction project pays particular attention to acoustics and energy performance, including airtightness and rainwater management.
3. A16 De Groene Boog project: two more segments to go on flyover (The Netherlands)
The flyover viaduct above the Terbregseplein is progressing steadily. The team started concreting works on segment fifteen of deck B, out of a total of 17 segments. Two more to go and the deck will be complete!
As the construction of the A16 Rotterdam motorway is making progress, the replanting has now also started in phases. Currently, 4,100 trees, mainly Canadian poplar trees, are being replanted. They were chosen because they grow fast and reach a height of 25 to 30 metres. The choice of trees, bushes and other sorts of plants is being made based on the added value for biodiversity. The local community kicked off the planting.
4. Beveren Tunnel: preparatory works have started (Belgium)
Together with our partners in the consortium TM Bever, STADSBADER, STADSBADER CONTRACTORS, and Equans and in close consultation with Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer - AWV), BESIX Unitec, BESIX Infra, and BESIX are starting to take various preparatory steps for the total renovation of the Beveren Tunnel. The tunnel is outdated and in urgent need of renovation. Consortium TM Bever was appointed by AWV to manage the renovation.
And then this...
On Monday, the Belgian Queen Mathilde visited the community transit centre of NGO Cavoequiva in a poor neighbourhood of Adjamé, a town close to Abidjan (Ivory Coast), dedicated to defending human rights and promoting well-being, particularly of children and women. This is one of the associations supported by BESIX Foundation. Our local project team and our Foundation are carrying on an impactful partnership with NGO CavoEquiva. The NGO is currently welcoming about 80 young girls and women, who were victims of human trafficking, exploitation, or other forms of violence.
Queen Mathilde is in the Ivory Coast for the moment as a defender of the UN SDG’s. The seventeen goals aim to promote sustainable economic, social, and environmental development worldwide. At Cavoequiva, four of the SDGs - good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, and reducing inequalities - are being addressed.
