In Amsterdam, the colleagues of BESIX Nederland are currently bringing to life "Mediavaert", DPG Media's revolutionary new timber-hybrid office. Spanning over 44,000 m², this media-centric masterpiece is poised to become one of Europe's largest timber-hybrid office buildings, a first of its magnitude on the continent.
Mediavaert's timber-hybrid design symbolises a significant stride towards eco-friendly construction. Unlike conventional building materials like concrete, timber production results in remarkably lower levels of CO2 and nitrogen. Plus, the trees, during their growth phase, act as natural carbon absorbers. The CO2 remains embedded within the wood even after it transforms into our construction material. This makes Mediavaert not just a greenhouse gas neutral entity, but potentially a carbon-positive one.
The building stands as a testament to energy-efficiency as well, armed with features like underground heat/cold storage paired with a heat pump and rooftop solar panels. With this environmentally conscious approach, Mediavaert targets a BREEAM Outstanding certification.
Last week, during the Netherlands' celebrated Construction Day, the gates of the Mediavaert's construction site swung open for the public. The event was a behind-the-scenes peek that drew over 230 curious visitors, from architects and engineering students to local residents and journalists. It was an absolute delight to see the younger generation also join the day of exploration and learning. On this bright sunny day, it was truly heartwarming to witness such a diverse group of interested individuals.
Thanks and congratulations to all the colleagues who are pouring their dedication into this beautiful project!
