On Sunday 31 May 2026, the construction industry in Belgium is opening many doors to the general public. From 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., visitors have the opportunity to get an overview of the sector and discover the expertise present in the Belgian construction landscape. Of course, BESIX Group is participating in this construction event par excellence! For this edition, visitors can take a look behind the scenes of four construction sites on which BESIX and its affiliates are working:
Canal Tunnels - BESIX & BESIX Infra
BESIX, BESIX Infra and the other partners in the ROCO consortium are opening the construction pit for the future Canal Tunnels in Antwerp. These tunnels are an important part of the ROCO construction site, one of the partial projects of the overarching Oosterweel Link project. The Canal Tunnels consist of two stacked tunnels, beginning at the Amerikadok and diverging beneath the canal. Building these tunnels requires 4.7 kilometers of diaphragm walls reaching depths of up to 60 meters. These walls stabilize the groundwater and allow the ROCO team to create dry construction pits, essential for the tunnel works.
During Open Sites Day, you will get an exclusive look at the construction pit and the different phases: the excavation works, the horizontal beams of 30 meters long that keep the pit open, the diaphragm walls and the first concrete works on the tunnel floor. Extra special is how you’ll be standing in the middle of the busy Abert Channel.
