Nordhavn Tunnel Project in Copenhagen: Update

Group 2 min read

The joint venture BESIX - MT Højgaard is excited to provide an update on the progress of the Nordhavn Tunnel project in Copenhagen, Denmark. This major infrastructure endeavour aims to improve traffic flow in the city and connect the bustling city center with the rapidly developing Nordhavn district.

Design Progress

In May 2023, the client gave a thumbs up to the basic design, which was a big milestone for the project. Since then, our team has been working at full speed to develop the detailed design. We've already submitted several packages for approval, and both the third party and client review processes are going well. Our goal is to have all detailed designs approved by April 2024.

Construction Update

Right now, our team is focused on leveling the working platform in the western area. In total, 225,000 m³ of sand has been pumped into that section of the existing harbour. We're using heavy earth moving equipment to get ready for installing main sheetpile retaining walls, which will start in October 2023. In the coming weeks, we'll begin lowering groundwater in this area by drilling reinfiltration wells.

In terms of progress on other fronts, we've successfully dredged and started filling sand in the crossing channel. Over the next few weeks, we'll strategically place more than 70,000 m³ of sand within this channel.

In the eastern area of Nordhavn Tunnel project site, demolition and clearance activities have been completed to make way for secant piles and sheetpiling works starting in October 2023.

Additionally, site installations are now complete and construction of access roads to different areas of the project is underway.

We're super excited about seeing further advancements as we remain committed to delivering a safe and reliable tunnel that will greatly benefit Copenhagen's residents and visitors alike.

The Future Implications

The Nordhavn Tunnel is expected to be completed in 2027 and will span an impressive length of 1.4 kilometers. This transformative project involves a variety of construction methods, including dredging, sand filling, and sheet piling.

The Nordhavn Tunnel project is a result of the joint venture between BESIX and MT Højgaard, two leading construction companies known for their expertise. This collaboration highlights the dedication and commitment to excellence that both organizations bring to every project they undertake.

Beyond its immediate impact on traffic flow, the Nordhavn Tunnel represents a significant investment in Copenhagen's future. By connecting key areas of the city, this infrastructure development will contribute to making Copenhagen more sustainable and livable for its residents.
