Mozambique LNG: Building a lasting legacy in Africa’s energy future

Me@BESIX 3 min read

At BESIX, we take on today’s boldest challenges to build a lasting legacy. The restart of the Mozambique LNG project is just that: a project that not only pushes the boundaries of engineering but also plays a pivotal role in shaping the global energy landscape.

Why Mozambique LNG matters

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) remains a cornerstone of the world’s energy mix. It is recognised by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a key component in all development pathways towards a more sustainable future. While LNG is not a black-and-white story in terms of sustainability, it is clear that it will continue to play a crucial role in supporting the global economy and enabling the energy transition. Mozambique, with some of the largest natural reserves of LNG in the world, is poised to become a major player in this sector.

A world-class collaboration

This landmark project is being developed by TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil, with CCS (a joint venture between Saipem and McDermott) as the EPC contractor and our direct client. BESIX is partnering with Mota-Engil, bringing together world-class expertise and a shared commitment to excellence. The project is located in Afungi, a region at the heart of Mozambique’s LNG ambitions.

BESIX’s role: engineering and innovation

BESIX Engineering is at the forefront of the project’s design, ensuring that every aspect meets the highest standards of safety, constructability, and innovation. Our scope includes the construction of the Mooring Offloading Facility and the LNG Jetty, critical infrastructure that will enable Mozambique to export LNG to markets around the globe. The jetty, stretching 4,600 metres, will be among the longest in the world, capable of accommodating the largest LNG carriers.

We are deploying major marine equipment from BESIX: 3 jack-up barges (2 owned and 1 hired), 2 crane barges, 8 floating transportation barges, 7 supporting vessels, 1 Derick launching girder of 150 meters long and one small launching girder.

Project Value: With a total investment value of EUR 17 billion, our project is valued at approximately USD 700 million.

Scope:

Mooring Offloading Facility

  • 1.4 km of quay wall (combiwall) - more than 600 piles
  • 5 berths

LNG Jetty

  • 2.7 km access trestle to be built with a launching girder starting from shore
  • 1.9 km of berth trestle to be built with marine equipment
  • 5 loading platforms
  • More than 1,200 piles
  • More than 45,000 tonnes of steel structure

This project confirms BESIX’sexpertisein developing landmark projects from the ground up, even in challenging environments that demand our highest level of knowledge.

Security and safety: our top priorities

The safety of our teams and partners is paramount. A comprehensive and robust security plan has been put in place by both the Mozambique government and TotalEnergies, ensuring a safe working environment for everyone involved. The project will involve compound-based living, with a rotation schedule of 6 weeks on and 3 weeks off.

Building for the future

This project is more than just an engineering challenge, it’s also an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on local communities, support Mozambique’s economic development, and contribute to a more resilient global energy system. By taking on this challenge, BESIX is helping to build a legacy that will endure for generations.
