Kangaroo Point Green Bridge: status update

Group 1 min read

As we approach the two-year mark, the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge project is making steady strides. Here's a glimpse into the progress on this 460-metre-long cable-stayed pedestrian bridge realised by BESIX Watpac in Brisbane, Australia.

On the Central Business District Side of the bridge: The construction team has successfully installed steel girders for spans 1-4. With spans 1, 2, and 4 already poured, the team is gearing up to complete the curved span 3 in the early part of next year. This will pave the way for the commencement of the eagerly anticipated restaurant atop spans 2 and 3.

A significant advancement has been made at Pier 4, known as the 'flower pier.' The completion of the outrigger platform and the assembly of both bottom and upper legs mark a key milestone. This week, the installation of the masthead will finish the pylon, setting the stage for the cable stressing campaign. Our expert team, with the aid of BESIX Engineering concrete technologists, has diligently worked to optimise the concrete mix, ensuring its compatibility with the intricate rebar design.

On the Kangaroo Point Side: Pier 5 now stands in its full glory, while span 7 is complete, and span 8 is on track for completion by the end of November.

The main span deck pours are currently underway. Adapting to challenges like increased pour distance, high temperatures, and intense UV exposure, the team has adjusted its schedule, commencing pours in the cooler, early hours of the morning to manage the behavior of the 50Mpa concrete mix effectively.

Looking ahead to 2024, the focus will be on completing the remaining main spans and the final touches, including handrails, canopies, and specially coloured concrete furniture. The construction of the restaurant atop spans 2 and 3, alongside plaza works and landscaping, are also on the agenda.

“After more than two years of working intensively together, the team has grown stronger and more cohesive. With this shared experience and expertise, there is great confidence in driving the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge project to its successful completion in 2024” Sjoerd Reijnaars, Technical Manager, BESIX Watpac.
