Enhancements to Life Saving Rules (LSR)

Group 1 min read

In 2013, BESIX introduced the Life Saving Rules (LSR) to prevent major accidents and near misses, becoming a core component of our safety culture. These rules have been crucial in safeguarding lives and are one of the 4 Fundamental Safety Principles of BESIX Group.

Recognising evolving workplace hazards, BESIX has revisited and refined the LSRs in 2024, using new data from recent incidents to ensure our safety measures remain industry-leading.

Key Changes:

  1. Life Saving Rule #1 - Working at Height: Stronger emphasis on Collective Protective Equipment (CPE) such as guardrails, safety nets, and scaffolding, alongside Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  2. Life Saving Rule #3 - Line of Fire: Expanded scope to include the "Line of Fire" concept, addressing body positioning towards hazards like moving vehicles and machinery.
  3. Life Saving Rule #5 - Energy Isolation: New rule focusing on isolating energy sources before maintenance, repair, or commissioning works to prevent accidents from uncontrolled energy release.
  4. Life Saving Rule #10 - Driving: Broader coverage now includes wearing seatbelts, avoiding driving under the influence or fatigue, minimizing distractions, and promoting road courtesy.

These updates reflect BESIX’s dedication to continuous improvement and protecting our workforce. Everyone has a role in ensuring compliance with the revised LSRs to maintain a safe work environment.

Resources like team meeting presentations and site office posters are available. Contact your local QHSE for materials or access the dedicated Life Saving Rules section on the Group intranet. The August edition of INSIDE will feature more details on these updates as well. This presentation and this animation are useful resources too!

Let’s continue to strengthen our safety culture and ensure a safer workplace for all.
