Circularity: pioneering now in future proofing our assets

Our projects have a real opportunity to stand out now in terms of sustainability and circularity by implementing the “Material Passport” developed by BESIX Engineering.

The research and developments carried out by BESIX Engineering's Sustainability department in this field are now considered, including by leading experts outside the group, to be amongst the most advanced, in particular in Belgium: all we have to do is implement them. We’re ready!

This is a call to action to our managers, our commercial, tendering and operational teams, as well as our real estate developers: we can implement the Material Passport from now on. BESIX Engineering will help you make it a success.

The Material Passport in three questions

  • What is the Material Passport?
As the name suggests, it is a passport, i.e. a set of precise information for each material that will be used on a construction site. The passport is a digital file that centralises all relevant information (origin, composition, reliability, maintenance log, repair instructions, possible end-of-life scenarios for reuse, refurbishment, recycling, etc.) : it gives each material a comprehensive, complete identity to make it future-proof.
  • Why is this important?
The Material Passport will help to make the construction sector more sustainable by increasing the life span of materials. Comprehensive data on the materials that make up a building or infrastructure are extremely useful, for example during renovations or repairs, for maintenance, and to facilitate the reuse or recycling of construction materials in the long-term. On this basis, forward-looking investors, developers, entrepreneurs and suppliers will be able to create new business models.
  • What has BESIX Engineering actually created?
Today, there are already a few pilot passports on the market, but there is a lack of standardisation in the content and digital landscape. BESIX Engineering has therefore developed a passport directly linked to the BIM model, which facilitates asset management. The Material Passport created by BESIX Engineering allows a real centralisation and conservation of data, and genuine standardisation which could be a standard for our sector.

Let's get on with it!

The Material Passport will sooner or later become a standard, either required by our clients or imposed by legislation. This is already the case in the Netherlands, where the Material Passport will be mandatory from 2023, and it is likely that Western European countries will follow in the near future. Today, BESIX can set the tone and be a leader in this field.

BESIX Engineering’s Sustainability department is available to each project or department in the group to present its solution and assist our teams in implementing it.
