As electricity consumption increases and traditional fossil fuels give way to sustainable energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, and hydroelectric power, the need to upgrade electricity distribution networks becomes crucial. These networks are vital for a smooth energy transition.
Fluvius, the electricity and natural gas network operator in all the municipalities of Flanders, has therefore taken a proactive step by awarding contracts to two new groups of contractors tasked with the urgent enhancement of local power grids across Flanders. The upgrade includes laying additional low-voltage cables and strengthening substations with more robust transformers.
Within this framework, Fluvius has enlisted TM Power4All, a collaboration between BESIX Connect and CAS-VOS, to fortify Flanders' local electricity grids. TM Power4All will add the necessary low-voltage cables to meet the future demands of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and solar panels, ensuring the grid's resilience against increasing energy requirements.
Working towards future-proof grids
This initiative is a crucial element of Fluvius's investment plan aimed at updating the electricity networks throughout Flanders. The project, spanning multiple cities and municipalities, leverages the expertise of specialised contractors as BESIX Connect, engaged for a five-year period, with an option to extend for three additional years.
Proactive grid reinforcement
Among the appointed contractors, TM Power4All will focus on proactively installing additional 400-volt cables to bolster the existing low-voltage grids. These enhancements will allow customers to connect additional power sources as their needs grow, such as when purchasing electric vehicles, aligning with previously developed municipal plans.
What to expect
Over the next five years, BESIX Connect and its partner CAS-VOS will work diligently to reinforce Flanders' electrical infrastructure. Each year, eleven teams will lay approximately 225 kilometers of cables, starting in the regions of Schelde-Lieve, followed by Mechelen and Leie-Schelde.
Being awarded this contract reaffirms BESIX Connect and BESIX Group as a whole in their role as key players in facilitating the energy transition.
