Last weekend, BESIX, BESIX Infra and BESIX Unitec - as part of the consortium TM Bever - successfully completed the first phase of the Beveren Tunnel’s comprehensive renovation in Antwerp’s port area! Meanwhile, work on the second phase has already begun, focusing on the tunnel section that will carry traffic towards the Netherlands. The complete renovation is expected to be finished by the end of this year.
Every year, up to 4.75 million vehicles pass through the Beveren Tunnel, making it one of the most crucial traffic arteries in the Antwerp port area. To ensure the infrastructure's viability in the future, a thorough renovation was necessary. The tunnel is undergoing significant changes structurally, visually and technically. The consortium is replacing the road surface and lighting, modernising the tunnel entrances, installing a new ventilation system and upgrading the emergency escape routes. Additionally, the service buildings are being renovated, and the tunnel is being equipped with all necessary technologies to meet the latest European safety and sustainability standards. Finally, a solar panel park will provide renewable energy, while a water treatment plant has been realised to treat up to 3.6 million litres of groundwater daily.
"The transparent, constructive and determined attitude that characterises the TM Bever team is the reason for this project's success. I'm proud that we've successfully completed this first phase together. Let's tackle the second phase with the same enthusiasm!" – Koen De Mey, Project Manager at TM Bever
Congratulations and best of luck with the second phase, colleagues!
