We are proud to announce our latest contract win: the construction of a state-of-the-art research & development facility for UCB in Braine-l'Alleud, Belgium. This landmark project reinforces our leadership in delivering complex, high-value infrastructure in the life sciences sector.
The new facility, known as the Arkelia project, will be build in joint venture with Cegelec. The contract was officially awarded on 13 June 2025, with construction set to begin on 1 July 2025 and completion expected by September 2027.
A strategic investment in innovation
Located just 25 km from Brussels, the Arkelia facility will serve as a cutting-edge research and development hub, directly connected to UCB’s existing research and production buildings. The new structure will span approximately 10,000 m² across multiple levels, housing laboratories, offices, and collaborative workspaces designed to attract top scientific talent to Belgium.
Scope and sustainability
The project scope includes deep foundations, structural concrete works, advanced MEP systems, and high-performance façades. BESIX and Cegelec will also deliver external landscaping, roadworks, finishing works, FF&E works, and full commissioning. The facility is targeting BREEAM Outstanding certification, with sustainability measures such as responsible construction practices, biodiversity protection, and waste management embedded throughout the build.
“We are honored to continue our partnership with UCB and contribute to their vision for scientific excellence in Belgium,” said Mark Beyst, General Manager BESIX Belgium-Luxembourg. “This project builds on our successful collaboration with UCB on the Genesis facility, delivered in 2024. Our strong in-house engineering expertise, combined with our site execution management approach, will successfully address this new and challenging project.”
