Week of 4 August

1. July video update in New Zealand

In Christchurch, construction of One New Zealand Stadium is advancing well. The roof installation has now passed the halfway mark. Part of the roof uses ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene), a transparent material that allows sunlight to reach the turf while shielding visitors from wind and rain.

Meanwhile, exterior cladding is nearly finished, seating installation is well underway, and landscaping around the venue was completed last week. Discover the full update in the video below.

Keep up the good work, colleagues!

2. Socogetra renews railway bridge after floods (Belgium)

After the devastating floods of 2021 in Belgium, the Louheau railway bridge along the Liège-Verviers line was left badly damaged. Temporary fixes kept things moving, but now it’s time for a lasting solution. And who better to take it on than our colleagues at Socogetra! The team is giving the bridge a full makeover, with a smart design that avoids placing supports in the riverbed. The new structure, built in one piece by MBB, is a deliberate step towards climate resilience, helping protect train traffic from future floods. Well done, team!

3. A touch of creativity at the Scheldt Tunnel (Belgium)

On 4 and 5 August, the third of eight Scheldt Tunnel elements was successfully immersed beneath the River Scheldt in Antwerp. This complex operation, carried out by BESIX and its COTU partners, required precise coordination during a narrow tidal window to position the massive concrete segment with millimetre accuracy. However, it was not only a moment of engineering precision, but also one of artistic inspiration! Among the spectators was BESIX RED colleague Nathalie Renotte, who added a creative touch to the occasion by capturing the moment in a painting from the viewpoint. It looks amazing, thanks Nathalie!

4. Cranes incoming (Belgium)

Last week, two brand-new Sennebogen 653E telescopic crawler cranes rolled into the BESIX fleet. Known for their stability and lifting power, these machines are perfectly suited for the complex and large-scale infrastructure projects, such the Oosterweel Link in Antwerp and the R4 Ring Road project in Ghent. They follow two earlier arrivals this year, reinforcing BESIX’s commitment to equipping teams with the best tools to deliver excellence on site. We’re looking forward to seeing them in action soon!
