Week of 20 May
1. More than 50 apprentices at Kangaroo Point Green Bridge site (Australia)
Our colleagues at BESIX Watpac have recently achieved a major milestone at the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge project, as they surpassed their workforce target with 53 local apprentices now employed! Being part of the team offers an excellent opportunity for these young talents to kickstart their careers. One apprentice said: “It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience being part of and learning from everyone– it’s given me the launching pad I need to be able to look for more work in the future.”
Spanning approximately 460 metres across Brisbane River, the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is one of the world’s longest single-mast cable-stayed pedestrian bridges. It connects the Kangaroo Point neighborhood with Brisbane’s Central Business District and will significantly improve connectivity in the area.
2. Successful nightly interventions at De Gavers water production plant (Belgium)
In Harelbeke, located between the Belgian cities of Kortrijk and Waregem, BESIX Unitec, BESIX Environment, and Veolia are renovating the water production plant De Gavers. Recently, the teams undertook two critical interventions as part of this project. Since the interventions required the pumps to be temporarily deactivated, these interventions were scheduled overnight.
The first intervention involved replacing several valves. The second focused on modifying the pressurised collector to connect new pumps. Additionally, a new anti-flooding boiler was installed and connected to the new collector. Thanks to meticulous preparation and effective teamwork, both interventions were completed ahead of schedule. Congratulations, team De Gavers!
3. A vast expanse of sand or future Dammam Stadion site? (Saudi Arabia)
The picture below may appear to just show a vast expanse of sand, but what you actually see is the future location of the Dammam Stadium in Saudi Arabia! BESIX Middle East and partner Al Bawani will be designing and building this brand-new stadium on behalf of Saudi Aramco. In March 2024, the Letter of Intent was signed, and we expect the contract to be signed in the coming days. Exciting!
4. Man overboard at the Rail Baltica Riga Central Station project (Latvia)
The water of the River Daugava might still be cold, but it didn't stop our QHSE team in Riga (Latvia) from conducting a man overboard drill to test the safety procedures. Spoiler alert: the team succeeded, and the dummy survived!
In the Latvian capital, the BERERIX consortium—including BESIX—is realizing the Rail Baltica Riga Central Station project, which includes the design and construction of a new central station building, a major railway bridge over the River Daugava, railway embankments, and track works.
And then this… Another successful season of helping the homeless in Brussels with Operation Thermos!
Every year, BESIX Foundation volunteers participate in the Operation Thermos evenings, during which they prepare hot meals and serve them to the homeless in Brussels during the colder months. Last month marked the final evening of this season's series of Operation Thermos evenings. For the occasion, our Group’s CEO Pierre Sironval and Chief People Officer Geert Aelbrecht, along with their assistants and several team members, also took part.
