Week of 19 June

1. First dolphin encapsulated at Ras Laffan (Qatar)

BESIX Middle East via MIC Construct is carrying out important marine works in the world's largest LNG operations centre in Ras Laffan, for the rehabilitation of five dolphins (three mooring and two breasting) at LNG berths 3 & 4. The five dolphins show formation of cracks, which cannot be repaired, therefore encapsulation is required to guarantee the structural integrity of the dolphins until 2035.

The team in Qatar has been diligently working on the fabrication of the 300-ton structural steel encapsulation jackets and making necessary preparations in the dolphin area to accommodate these impressive 17-meter-high structures. As you can see in the video and pictures below, the sea launching, towing, and installation of the first jacket has successfully taken place. Congratulations to our colleagues who have been working hard on this intricate marine operation!

Situated some 80 km from Doha, Ras Laffan Petrochemical Industrial City ranks as the world's largest artificial harbour and the world's leading LNG export centre.

2. SDG Awareness Workshop (BESIX worldwide)

An awareness workshop was recently organised at BESIX Academy on the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations, which serve as basis to BESIX in developing its ESG strategy. The session was co-chaired with CIFAL, a UN-supported global network of training centres aiming at helping organisations to advance sustainable development. Participants learned about why SDG’s hold great importance for our organisation and gained insight on how to incorporate sustainability principles into their daily work, thus helping BESIX Group towards achieving its ambitions.

3. Sod-turning & smoking ceremony at St George Hospital (Australia)

On 8 June, BESIX Watpac held a sod turning and smoking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction of the third stage of St George Hospital Redevelopment. New South Wales Premier Minns, Health Minister Ryan Park and several representatives from BESIX Watpac, including CEO Mark Baker, joined Traditional Owners to celebrate this major milestone. The event commenced with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by the local Bidjigal and Dharawal speaking people acknowledging the significance of the land and the importance of Indigenous culture. During the ceremony, indigenous plants are burned to create smoke, blessing the project.

Mark Baker, CEO BESIX Watpac (extreme right on the picture below): "BESIX Watpac is proud to have been entrusted with delivering this critical project for the local community. Our extensive experience in delivering healthcare facilities enables us to understand the criticality of precision planning as well as the evolving needs of hospitals and their stakeholders.”

Congratulations to BESIX Watpac for yet another new healthcare building project!

4. Bridge now complete at Henneaulaan (Belgium)

During the weekend of 10-11 June, the BESIX and BESIX Infra teams placed the second and final bridge section on Hector Henneau Avenue over the Brussels Ring Road in collaboration with subcontractors Iemants and Sarens. This was done in a shorter time frame than initially planned. The impressive operation started at 8 PM on Saturday evening and was successfully completed around 11 AM on Sunday morning. In the video below, you can witness how spectacular this operation truly was:

Congratulations to the BESIX and BESIX Infra teams for this prowess!

And then this…

The World Environment Day of 5 June was an ideal opportunity for our colleagues in Tanzania to hold a beach cleaning event!

In the bay of Tanga, on the north coast of Tanzania, BESIX and its partner Ballast Nedam were awarded a contract in 2022 to design and build a jetty and load-out facilities. This project includes a structure extending approximately two kilometres from the coast into the Indian Ocean and leading to a loading platform with mooring and berthing dolphins.
