Week of 19 May

1. Milestone at Aquafin’s Sludge Mono-Treatment Plant (Belgium)

Our team working on the new Sludge Mono-Treatment Plant for Aquafin in the port of Ghent has reached a big milestone earlier this week. In just 20 days of non-stop work, they built a 40-metre-high sludge bunker using slipform technology. That’s 750 tonnes of steel reinforcement and 4,000 m³ of concrete, all placed with precision and teamwork around the clock. Hats off to the FOSTER team for their dedication!

Scheduled to begin operations in 2027, the plant will treat sewage sludge from about four million people in Flanders. This corresponds to two-thirds of all sewage sludge in the region. BESIX and Indaver, under the FOSTER consortium, are responsible for the design, build, financing, and maintenance and operations until 2046.

2. First concrete pour at Shellharbour Hospital (Australia)

Over to Australia, where our BESIX Watpac team has marked an exciting step forward at the new Shellharbour Hospital with the first concrete pour. This initial pour sets the foundations for the future perioperative unit, which will feature cutting-edge operating theatres.

It’s just the beginning of a project that will bring major improvements to local healthcare. Once finished, the hospital will offer expanded emergency services, specialised surgery, enhanced mental health support and better parking.

3. Triangle is taking shape (France)

Near the Expo Porte de Versailles in Paris, our BESIX France team is constructing Triangle, a unique new mixed-use destination, offering premium offices, a 4-star Radisson Blu hotel, retail spaces, and at the summit a panoramic viewing deck and a restaurant overviewing Paris. Works are advancing well, with the 180-metre-high building now having reached the 25th floor!

4. Second half Meulestede Bridge installed (Belgium)

Last week, BESIX Unitec and its partners installed the second half of the Meulestede Bridge in Ghent (Belgium). The different bridge sections were lifted into place with the help of a floating crane. With the heavy lifting done, teams moved on to attaching ballast, installing hydraulic systems and welding the structure together.

Crossing the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, the Meulestede Bridge is an important link between the western and eastern side of the R4 Ring Road in the north of Ghent. The new bridge will feature five lanes and two moveable sections. The project also includes upgrades to improve safety in the surrounding area.

And then this... Young visitors at Zayed National Museum (UAE)

Last week in Abu Dhabi, the team at the Zayed National Museum had some very special guests. As part of a series of visits organised by BESIX Middle East, employees and their families were invited to explore the site and get a behind-the-scenes look at this iconic project. A great way to spark curiosity and share the excitement before the museum officially opens!
