1. BESIX Award presented to promising engineer from University of Leuven (Belgium)
Last Friday, representatives from top companies in Belgium, including BESIX, awarded master's thesis prizes to KUL Engineering Sciences graduates who had written an outstanding thesis in one of the companies’ domains. Jean Polet, General Manager Key Projects, presented the BESIX Award to Caitlin Lommaert for her remarkable thesis on “Hydration and strength development of ternary cements with carbonates from washing slurry powder”. Congratulations to all these talented young engineers, especially Caitlin for winning the BESIX Award!
2. BESIX Middle East colleague’s drawings recognised by Frank Gehry (United Arab Emirates)
One of our colleagues in Abu Dhabi, Maria Alwan, Sustainability Expert Manager at BESIX Middle East, has made beautiful drawings of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. So beautiful that starchitect Frank Ghery, who designed the museum, has given her the honour of signing one of them. Bravo Maria, what a lovely recognition of your talent!
No wonder this iconic museum BESIX Middle East is building on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island is inspiring artists as its design is a true work of art!
3. Scheldt Tunnel team is progressing towards the finish line (Belgium)
At the dry dock in Zeebruges, our colleagues of the COTU JV are making great progress in the construction of the Scheldt Tunnel. To date, six out of eight 160 metre-long, 40-metre-wide, and 10-meter-high tunnel elements are complete, while the remaining two segments are actively under construction. The team is also preparing the already finished segments for transport in spring 2025, which includes the laying of piping and waterproofing. When all segments are ready, the dry dock will be flooded and the segments will be floated and towed to Antwerp via the North Sea and the West-Schelde River. Upon arrival, they will be sunk, assembled, and linked to the riverbanks. Structural work on the last two segments is expected to be completed by mid-September, finishing by April 2025. The Schelde tunnel is one of the elements of the Oosterweel Link project in Antwerp, which will complete the city's ring road and significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity in the region. Congratulations to the COTU team on this fine achievement!
4. A-frame in place at Tanga Jetty project (Tanzania)
Last Saturday, was an important day for our colleagues at the Tanga Jetty project. The 'A-frame' was mounted on the launching girder. This is an important milestone in the assembly of the girder which is nearing completion. Soon the team in Tanga will start with the commissioning of this equipment and the first piles will be driven into the sea ground using the launching girder. You’re making great progress, Tanga team!
And then this… Jacques Delens, Franki Foundations, and BESIX tackle each other in hockey tournament (Belgium)
BESIX Group recently participated in the 14th edition of the Hockey Corporate Tournament in Brussels with three teams of Jacques Delens, Franki Foundations, and BESIX. It was a great opportunity for the players to meet colleagues from other entities, and to network with other construction companies. Jacques Delens won fourth place, but also the fair-play trophy!
