Week of 6 November
1. Vanhout is ready to dive into a new PPP (Belgium)
Vanhout has just started building a completely CO2 neutral and highly insulated sustainable swimming pool complex. Covering 3,000 m², this impressive project is designed to become a holistic recreational destination, with a particular emphasis on fun and relaxation. Visitors can look forward to an extensive wellness area, wild water rapids, water slides, and even a refreshing outdoor pool.
Carried out on behalf of the Municipality of Bredene, this swimming pool complex marks a valuable addition to Vanhout’s extending Public-Private Partership portfolio, also reinforcing our company’s commitment to sustainability. Indeed, the pool will operate with only half the energy consumption of a traditional pool: in combination with geothermal energy, it will operate entirely electrically. What's more, the roof will do double duty by acting as a massive solar panel, thus further reducing the swimming pool’s environmental footprint. Best of luck in this new sustainable PPP, Vanhout!
2. Poly Centre adds an award to BESIX Watpac's achievements (Australia)
Just over a month ago, our Watpac colleagues in New South Wales moved to their new office in the heart of Sidney, the Poly Centre building. Last weekend, this stunning 25-storey commercial tower received the award for Best Commercial Building at the Master Builders Association of NSW State Awards. This constitutes a direct result of BESIX Watpac’s dedication, of its team’s meticulous planning, coordination, innovation, and collaboration. Congratulations are definitely in order, BESIX Watpac!
3. BuildUp CEO nominated Young Construction Personality of the Year 2023 (Belgium)
CEO of BuildUp, Hélène de Troostembergh, has been nominated "Young Construction Personality of the Year 2023" for the Belgian Construction Awards. This nomination represents the cherry on the cake for the startup that just won the prize for Provincial SME of the Year 2023!
Since stepping into the construction industry, Hélène de Troostembergh has been driven by a singular purpose: to radically transform construction methods to reduce the sector’s ecological footprint. You can find more insights into BuildUp’s strategy and mission here.

4. Ongoing progress in Nordhavn Tunnel (Denmark)
Now we move to Denmark, where our Danish colleagues are doing impressive progress on the Nordhavn Tunnel project. The installation of sheet piles for the construction pit has begun. They have also started the drilling and installation of uplift anchors.
The Nordhavn team is also doing excellent work in stakeholder management. Regular meetings are organised with local businesses and residents of Nordhavn. At the last meeting, participants expressed their satisfaction with the way BESIX and its JV partner MT Højgaard are communicating regularly, proactively, and comprehensively about the project. Congrats to our Danish colleagues for keeping their neighbours happy!
And then this...
Maxim Maveau, People Manager Operations BU Belgium-Luxembourg, recently had the honour to hand out the BESIX prize for the best thesis to Kito Luyten, a student at the faculty Engineering Sciences and Architecture at the University of Ghent. This prize was awarded for his thesis on “Mixture design of an environmentally friendly alkali-activated concrete for 3D printing”.
