On 10 October 2024, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands inaugurated Mediavaert, a state-of-the-art hybrid timber office building realised by BESIX for media company DPG Media in Amsterdam. This six-storey building, located along the Amstel River in Amsterdam, now serves as the headquarters for 1,700 DPG Media employees.
Example of sustainable construction
Mediavaert stands out as a prime example of sustainable construction, combining timber, concrete, and glass to create a low-carbon structure that prioritises environmental responsibility. It was developed by Being in partnership with Team V Architecture and incorporates 6,500 m³ timber, making it one of the largest hydrid timber projects in the world. It demonstrates how materials like timber can help reduce carbon emissions while providing a modern, healthy workspace. In addition, the building integrates energy-efficient solutions and green spaces, minimising its environmental footprint. This has earned the project a BREEAM Outstanding certification.
BESIX Nederland, who was in charge of the building’s design and build, collaborated closely with its partners throughout the project to address the challenges of hybrid timber construction. Mediavaert embodies BESIX’s commitment to quality and sustainability, offering DPG Media a modern and eco-friendly workspace.
Not BESIX’s first experience
Mediavaert is not BESIX’s first experience with timber construction. In 2021, BESIX Watpac completed the NIOA headquarters expansion in Brisbane, Australia. This project for a leading company in the Australian defence sector included a five-storey hybrid timber structure, further contributing to a reduced carbon footprint of the asset.
