Preparation for upgraded CO₂ Performance Ladder audit

Group 1 min read

At the end of November 2026, BESIX, together with Franki Foundations Belgium, BESIX Infra, BESIX Unitec and BESIX Environment, will undergo an audit to upgrade their CO₂ Performance Ladder certification to the new 4.0 standard for their activities in Benelux. The updated framework places greater emphasis on measurable emission reduction targets and closer collaboration with suppliers, subcontractors and clients.

A more ambitious framework

In 2025, SKAO, the organisation behind the CO₂ Performance Ladder, introduced version 4.0 of the scheme. The updated standard places greater emphasis on short- and medium-term emission reduction targets and on collaboration across the entire value chain, from suppliers and subcontractors to clients and project partners.
BESIX, BESIX Environment, Franki Foundations Belgium, BESIX Infra and BESIX Unitec currently hold the highest certification level, Level 5 according version 3.1 of the scheme, demonstrating their commitment to reducing emissions within their own operations and value chain.

From targets to action

Over the past year, BESIX has reviewed its greenhouse gas reduction objectives and established new targets for 2028 and 2035 covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
To support these ambitions, a Climate Transition Plan has been developed. The plan translates long-term objectives into practical actions and priorities that will guide our efforts in the coming years.
Key priorities include reducing emissions from construction materials, improving energy efficiency, increasing the use of low-carbon alternatives and accelerating the electrification of equipment and vehicles.

A shared effort

These actions cannot be delivered by a single department. They require collaboration across projects, procurement, engineering, equipment management and many other functions throughout the Group.
Alongside actions within our own operations, we will also continue to work with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and industry partners to identify practical solutions and accelerate the transition towards lower-carbon construction.
The Climate Transition Plan and its associated targets have been endorsed by the management teams of all participating entities, providing a common direction for the years ahead.

“Successfully achieving the upgraded certification would recognise the progress already made while providing a robust framework to continue reducing emissions and delivering on our climate ambitions.” – Astrid van Parys, Group Head of Sustainability.
