Week of 24 July

1. Water is flowing in (Cameroon)!

July 18 marked an unforgettable moment as our team in Cameroon celebrated the start of the impoundment of the reservoir at the Nachtigal dam, the largest hydroelectric project in the country. This marks a crucial stage towards the commissioning of the power station. Next crucial milestone: the testing of the turbines towards the end of the year.

With an installed capacity of 420 MW of renewable energy, the dam is set to power up to 30% of Cameroon's electricity needs, paving the way for a greener future.

2. Grand opening in Abidjan (Ivory Coast)

On July 17, 2023, the Abidjan Exhibition Centre officially opened its doors in the presence of many an esteemed guest. The crown jewel of the Exhibition Centre is the 12,000 m² multi-purpose Convention Centre.

BESIX, in partnership with PFO Africa, was in charge of building the 3-dimensional structure, concrete shell and amazing roof. The roof cladding is the architectural cherry on the cake, with 8,000 unique-sized panels, each spanning 2.5 m². Well done!

3. Happy birthday (Luxembourg)

Another reason to celebrate last week: colleagues from LuxTP have officially celebrated their 50th anniversary last Friday.

Founded in 1973 as a Luxembourg subsidiary of French contractor “Muller Frères Travaux Publics”, LuxTP started growing, mainly around road and rail works. In 1998 BESIX Group acquired Muller Frères, along with LuxTP subsidiary. Even though Mueller Frères soon ceased to exist, LuxTP has since then steadily thrived and expanded its horizons. Some of its most remarkable projects include the Adolphe Bridge renovation, the iconic Philharmonie, and the funicular railway in Luxembourg's capital. Watch this video for a retrospect of LuxTP through the years.

4. Topping out celebration (Belgium)

Our colleagues at Jacques Delens recently celebrated the end of structural works at their ‘Waterloo 543’ site, an 18-unit social housing complex in the south-east of Brussels, by putting a traditional flower bouquet on top of the building. Congratulations to the team for the work accomplished so far!

And then this… Remember the sunscreen!

We love the prevention campaign currently running on the Nordhavn Tunnel project site (Denmark), to remind workers to protect themselves from the sun. Our level of Danish is not that good, but the campaign involves the slogan “Water + Sunscreen + Shadow”, smiling workers and a lot of sun screen ;-)
