Week of 03 July
1. Award-winning time for BESIX Watpac Adelaide team (Australia)
Congratulations to our Australian team who delivered the Vickers Vimy Exhibition Space for Adelaide Airport! The project received a high commendation for ‘Commercial Construction: $2M to $25M’ at the South Australia 2023 Australian Institute of Building Awards. This remarkable project created a new permanent home for the historic 100+ year old Vickers Vimy aircraft - the first to fly from England to Australia.
2. Ministerial visit at the A16 De Groene Boog Rottemeren tunnel (The Netherlands)
Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Waterways Mark Harbers visited BESIX Nederland’s A16 De Groene Boog project. He was very enthusiastic about the construction method used for the Rottemeren tunnel and very impressed by the fact that we are building the world’s first energy-neutral highway with tunnel.
The project has also reached a major milestone as the tunnel has now reached the other side of the Rotte river. All construction pits have been linked to each other and the Rottemerentunnel is now complete. Great job, BESIX NL team!
3. Major milestone for Toots Thielemans subway station (Belgium)
A major milestone was reached on the ‘Constitution’ site of the Metro 3 line commissioned by the Brussels public transport company at the level of the future Toots Thielemans metro station, which is named after the famous Belgian jazz harmonica musician. After the walls had been erected, the roof of the future underground site has been completed on all the segments. Excavations under the roof slab have started and for the moment we still have 100,000 m³ of earth to evacuate before getting to the foundation slab level. The process (‘Stross Method’) is explained in this video:
4. BESIX shining high in Morocco and Luxembourg
The Mohammed VI Tower in Rabat has been awarded the price for ‘Best performance in terms of engineering or construction projects’ at the Caminos Madrid awards. This prestigious annual award, presented by the Madrid College of Civil Engineers, is considered a benchmark distinction in the world of construction.
With its slimline structure, the 250-metre-high Mohammed VI Tower is designed to be visible from a distance of 50 kilometres all round. The building consists of a tower set on a podium, to resemble a rocket on its launch pad.
The design of the Mohammed VI Tower presents major structural challenges, in terms of its internal structure which is made up of an eccentric inner core and an outer tube, its floor structure composed of metal beams arranged radially and a composite sheet metal slab, its location in a seismic zone and the need to control its static and dynamic behaviour against wind loads. All of these challenges and the innovative solutions adopted have led Spanish professionals to hail the performance of the Mohammed VI Tower in terms of design and engineering. Bravo to the BESIX Morocco team!
