Week of 2 December
1. Double milestone at GO4ZERO project (Belgium)
In Obourg (Belgium), the BESIX-Denys teams have reached a major milestone at the GO4ZERO project, which includes the construction of a state-of-the-art cement production plant: they poured the first concrete for the foundation slab. In addition, our foundations specialist, Franki Foundations, reached the mark of 1,000 piles installed. A double milestone to be celebrated! Congratulations, colleagues!
The GO4ZERO plant is set to reshape cement production and aims at producing up to 2.3 million tonnes of CO2-neutral cement annually by 2029. Central to the facility will be an advanced air-oxyfuel switchable kiln, equipped with carbon purification technology.
2. Pre-assembly of first outer ring element for Aramco Stadium (Saudi Arabia)
Construction of the 47,000-seat Aramco Stadium in Dammam (Saudi Arabia) is progressing well. A delegation from the BESIX-Al Bawani team recently visited Taixing’s factory, where the first component of the stadium’s outer ring was pre-assembled. This element will soon be transported to its final location on-site. Each pre-assembled piece measures 65 metres in length, nine metres in height, and weighs 260 tonnes. Impressive!
3. Nordhavn Tunnel shines at night (Denmark)
In Copenhagen (Denmark), our team and its partner MT Højgaard are progressing well with the excavation of the 1.4-kilometre-long cut-and-cover Nordhavn Tunnel, which will extend 700 meters under the harbour. By the end of November, approximately 400,000 out of 600,000 tonnes of soil had been excavated. The team expects to be ready to start casting the tunnel floor in early 2025.
Winter has arrived in the Danish capital, leading to shorter days and early sunsets. To maintain safety on-site, ample lighting has been installed for a secure work environment!
4. Prestigious LEED Gold certification for Car-T (Belgium)
Our entity Vanhout’s project, Car-T, has achieved the prestigious LEED Gold certification under the new LEED v4 building standard. Completed in 2023, Car-T is a production facility and warehouse for CAR-T cell therapy, a therapy for cancer in which the patient’s own immune system is used to help fight the cancer.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a globally recognised certification system that sets the standard for sustainable building and green design. It evaluates buildings for their environmental impact and focuses on several key areas, such as energy efficiency, quality of life and sustainable materials. It’s time a building in Belgium has reached this level of the certification. Congratulations, team Vanhout!
And then this… BESIX Middle East celebrates National Day (UAE)
On 28 November, our colleagues in the Middle East celebrated the UAE’s National Day, which commemorates the formation of the United Arab Emirates. The day highlighted various experiences typical to the UAE’s culture, such as drinking Arabic coffee, applying henna designs and eating traditional Emirati dishes. Special guest of the day? A falcon, the national symbol and emblem of the UAE! Happy National Day once again, BESIX Middle East!
