On 3 June 2020, the Norwegian road authority Nye Veier evaluated the proposals received for the design and the construction of the E6 Moelv-Roterud infrastructure project. The proposal selected by Nye Veier, following an international tender, is the one submitted by the joint venture made up of BESIX and Rizzani de Eccher, associated, among others, with the Norwegian contractor AF Gruppen, the designer and consultant Multiconsult and architect Knut Selberg.

Nye Veier and the joint venture will start the clarification phase next week to keep the process on track and draw up a contract. The project could start as early as August this year with the design and approval phases, followed by construction to be completed by the end of 2025.

Joint Venture Proposal

The project comprises the construction of a 1,350-metre main bridge over Lake Mjøsa and an 11-kilometre section of motorway.

  • The bridge will be a major landmark for the region. The proposal of the joint-venture is based on the use of sustainable solutions, including the extensive use of wood, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also of high environmental interest. Lake Mjøsa is the largest lake in Norway and also one of the deepest in Europe, with a depth of up to 80 meters at the project location.
  • The E6 motorway from Moelv to Roterud consists of four lanes and is approximately 11 km long. The project involves both the widening of existing infrastructure and the construction of new ones. In addition, there are several small bridges and culverts along the alignment.

Our expertise

In September 2019, several months ahead of schedule, BESIX and Rizzani de Eccher successfully completed Crown Princess Mary Bridge (Kronprinsesse Marys Bro) in Denmark. Last year BESIX started another design and build contract with the Latvian rail authorities for Rail Baltica, the Riga Central Station, which includes a bridge over the Daugava river and introduces new European rail infrastructure. With the E6 Moelv-Roterud project, BESIX continues to expand its presence in Northern Europe, in Norway.

Other bridges built by BESIX include the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi, designed by architect Zaha Hadid. In 2020, BESIX is contributing to the design and construction of numerous bridges throughout the world, including the Shindagha Bridge in Dubai, the Theemswegtracé viaduct in Rotterdam.

BESIX is a leading Belgian group, based in Brussels and operating in 25 countries and on 5 continents, in the construction, real estate development and concessions sectors. Its iconic projects include the construction of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower in Dubai, buildings of the European Parliament in Brussels and the Great Egyptian Museum on the Giza pyramids plateau.

The Group's internal engineering department enables BESIX to design and carry out unique and complex projects, particularly in terms of technical and environmental aspects.
